How to Celebrate the Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

How to Celebrate the Month or the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with Children
June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a beautiful and powerful devotion that invites us to draw near to the tender, burning love of Christ. It’s a perfect month to help children understand that Jesus’ heart is full of mercy, compassion, and love for each one of us.
The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated on the Friday after the second Sunday after Pentecost. This year, it falls on Friday, June 27, 2025. It is a solemnity, meaning it’s one of the highest feast days in the Church.
Here are some simple ways to celebrate the Sacred Heart with your family this month or on the solemnity.

Sacred Heart Coloring & Cut-and-Glue Activity
Bring the image of the Sacred Heart to life with our printable Sacred Heart activity!
This resource includes a coloring page version and a simple cut-and-glue craft to build the traditional elements of the Sacred Heart: the crown of thorns, the flame, and the cross. As they color or assemble the pieces, talk about what each part means: the thorns for Jesus’ suffering, the fire for His burning love, and the cross for His sacrifice.

Enjoy Heart-Shaped Foods
Since June honors the Sacred Heart, incorporate heart-shaped snacks and meals into your family rhythm. Some of our favorites include:
- Heart-shaped strawberries- Slice strawberries into the shape of a heart and drizzle them with chocolate to look like a crown of thorns. Add peaches arranged like flames coming from the top of the heart to represent Christ’s burning love.
- Heart-shaped marshmallows- roasted over a fire to represent the Sacred Heart
- Heart-shaped hand pies or sandwiches- Cut a little slice in the side to represent the pierced heart of Jesus
- Sacred Heart Pizza- Shape your dough into a heart, top it with red sauce and “symbolic” toppings like red peppers or pepperoni (the blood and love of Christ), yellow peppers for the flame, and olives or herbs for the crown of thorns and cross at the top
- A “hearty” meat-based meal- While some Catholics choose to abstain from meat on Fridays (even outside of Lent) as an act of penance, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a solemnity meaning it is a high feast day in the Church. That means Friday abstinence is lifted and you’re invited to celebrate! It’s a great day to enjoy a joyful meal together as a family.
- Try your hand at latte art and make a heart in your cup of joe

Enthrone the Sacred Heart in Your Home
One beautiful tradition tied to the Sacred Heart devotion is the enthronement—placing an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a prominent spot in your home as a sign that Jesus is truly King of your household.
If possible, invite your parish priest to lead a home enthronement ceremony. But even without a formal visit, you can prayerfully place an image on your home altar or mantle and pray together as a family to dedicate your home to His Heart.

Pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Litany of the Sacred Heart is a beautiful and powerful prayer that draws us into the virtues of Jesus’ Heart: patience, mercy, humility, and more. It’s perfect for praying as a family during the month of June. Don’t worry if it feels long—start by just reading a few lines each night or alternating verses between parents and children.
