How to Celebrate the Feast of St. Dominic (August 8)

St. Dominic, the founder of the Dominican Order, is known for his love of learning, preaching, and prayer, especially the Rosary! His feast day on August 8 is a wonderful opportunity to dive into the beauty of the Rosary, explore God’s creation, and encourage children to wonder, learn, and pray.

Here are some simple and meaningful ways to celebrate his feast day at home!

Learn About St. Dominic Through Printables

St. Dominic’s mother had a dream before his birth that he would be a light to the world and Dominic spent his life pointing people to heaven through prayer, preaching, and devotion to the Rosary.

Start your celebration with our St. Dominic Coloring Page to introduce children to his life. As they color his black and white Dominican habit, share stories about how he traveled barefoot, spent long hours in prayer, and founded the “Order of Preachers” to bring others to Christ.

Then, take the learning outside! Use our St. Dominic Telescope Printable to make a simple stargazing tool. After assembling and decorating the telescope, head outside to look at the stars. Stargazing is a beautiful way to honor this saint who was known to pray under the night sky and lift souls to God.

Make a Nature Rosary (or a Rosary with Snacks!)

St. Dominic helped spread devotion to the Rosary, and his feast day is a beautiful time to make one together! You can:

  • Use objects from nature like pebbles, acorns, shells, or flowers

  • Use macaroni, cereal loops, or M&Ms for a fun and edible version

Refer to our How to Celebrate Our Lady of the Rosary blog post for more detailed ideas and inspiration for making a rosary with little hands.

As you make your rosary, talk about how each bead is a little prayer offered to Jesus through Mary.

Pray the Rosary as a Family

Once your rosary is made, use it! Set aside time as a family to pray a decade or the whole Rosary together.
