How to Celebrate the Feast of St. John the Apostle (December 27)

St. John the Apostle, the “Beloved Disciple,” stayed close to Jesus and stood at the foot of the Cross beside Mary. He is the patron of friendship, writers, and theologians. His Gospel draws us deeply into the mystery of Christ’s love.

Here are simple, meaningful ways to celebrate his feast!

Make Our Mini Gospel of St. John Printable

Kids can assemble a tiny booklet of key points from John’s Gospel.

Eat Something Fried

According to tradition, attempts to martyr St. John involved poison—and even being thrown into a pot of boiling oil—but he remained unharmed by God’s protection. Because of this, consider enjoying some fried foods on his feast day as a lighthearted way to remember how nothing could harm the beloved disciple. Try serving french fries, donuts, potato chips, or any simple fried snack your kids love.

Drink Grape Juice or Sparkling Cider

Raise a small toast with grape juice or sparkling cider to remember the story of St. John’s miraculous cup. Tradition says that when his enemies tried to poison him, he blessed the cup of wine and the poison lost its power. Sharing a simple, festive drink is a family-friendly way to honor God’s protection over St. John.

Pray for a Friend

Since St. John is the patron of friendship, pray for a friend or even invite one over for a simple playdate or meal.

Look at Sacred Art of the Last Supper

Spend a moment reflecting on John leaning on Christ’s heart. Invite kids to notice details of the painting.

Pray a Hail Mary

Honor the special bond between Mary and St. John—the moment Jesus entrusted His Mother to John is central to his story.
