How to Celebrate the Feast of St. Augustine Zhao Rong (July 9)

St. Augustine Zhao Rong was once a Chinese soldier who escorted a missionary priest to martyrdom. Moved by the priest’s faith and courage, Augustine converted to Christianity, later became a priest himself, and was ultimately martyred for his faith. On July 9, we remember him and the 119 Chinese martyrs who laid down their lives out of love for Christ.

This feast is a powerful way to introduce children to the global Church and to the heroic witness of faith under persecution. Below are simple, meaningful ideas to celebrate this feast day at home with your family.

Create a Chinese Lantern Craft

One of the most memorable ways to honor this feast is with a hands-on craft that invites both creativity and reflection. Our printable Chinese lantern craft includes an illustration of St. Augustine Zhao Rong with the prayer: “St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions, pray for us.”

Children can color the saint image, assemble the lantern, and display it in a prayer space or dining area as a reminder that Christ’s light shines in every culture—even in times of persecution.

Enjoy a Simple Chinese-Inspired Meal

Sharing a meal is a wonderful way to connect with the cultural roots of a saint’s story. For this feast day, consider preparing a simple Chinese-inspired dinner. Family-friendly ideas include:

  • Fried rice with egg and vegetables
    Steamed or pan-fried dumplings

  • Jasmine or oolong tea, served warm or iced

You can set the table with red or gold accents and light a candle to remember the martyrs.

Pray for the Catholic Church in China

This feast is a good opportunity to pray for people around the world who still face challenges for practicing their faith especially the Catholic Church in China. You might light a candle, pray a decade of the Rosary, or offer a short intention with your children.
