How to Celebrate the Feast of Sts. Simon and Jude (October 28)

Sts. Simon and Jude, two of Jesus’ apostles, are celebrated together on October 28. While we know relatively little about their lives, their witness as apostles reminds us to trust in God’s call, even when it’s challenging or mysterious. Tradition tells us they preached in the Middle East and parts of North Africa, bringing hope and faith to people far from the familiarity of Christ’s message. St. Jude, in particular, is known as the patron saint of hope, offering a model of perseverance and trust in God for all of us.

Even with just a single relic—the Edessa Medallion, believed to bear the image of Jesus—you can make their feast day meaningful for kids and families.

We’ve created a printable Edessa Medallion craft to help children learn about St. Jude and the apostles. Kids can color or decorate the medallion while learning the story behind it and the significance of relics in the Church. This craft also opens a discussion about the apostles’ courage, faithfulness, and how they carried Jesus’ message to the world.

Activities Inspired by St. Simon and St. Jude

  • St. Simon Activity: Simon Says
A playful twist on the classic “Simon Says” game, this activity channels St. Simon’s zeal in a fun, interactive way for young children. Add silly and faith-focused commands like: “Simon says, point to heaven!” “Simon says, clap for Jesus!” or “Simon says, wiggle your fingers for God!”

  • St. Jude Activity: Hope Candle ( Teaching About Hope Through Birthday Wishes) Do a “Hope Candle” activity with young children. Give each child a small birthday-style candle and, with parent supervision, explain: “The way we make a wish at our birthday before blowing out a candle is kind of like what the virtue of hope is. St. Jude is the patron saint of hope, and he helps us trust in God’s love even when things feel hard.” Encourage the child to think of something they have hope for and pray about it silently while the candle is lit. Then blow it out once finished.
